How to find competitor ads for free — and which ones are working.

By Denzel Geng · Updated October 20, 2026

Facts on this page verified October 13, 2026 against public sources.

Every major ad platform now publishes a free ad library. This guide shows how to find which competitors are actually advertising, pull up their ads on Meta, Google, TikTok and LinkedIn, and read the public signals that separate their winners from their tests.

To find competitor ads for free, search each platform's public ad library: Meta's Ad Library for Facebook and Instagram, Google's Ads Transparency Center for Search, YouTube and Display, TikTok's Ad Library (ads shown in the EEA, Switzerland and UK) and LinkedIn's Ad Library. Search by the competitor's Page, company or website rather than by keyword. The libraries show the ads running now; to judge which ones work, look at how long each has run and how often the brand has duplicated it.

Step zero

How do you find which competitors are actually running ads?

Start with the competitors who advertise, not the list in your head. Plenty of brands you think of as rivals spend nothing on paid social, and some of the brands buying your customers' attention are ones you've never heard of. Three free ways to find the real list:

Search the category, not the brand. In Meta's Ad Library, set the category to All ads and search the words your customers would use, such as "magnesium gummies" or "linen sheets". Keyword search returns ads from every advertiser that uses those words, so the advertisers that keep showing up are the ones spending in your space. Put the phrase in quotes for an exact match; unquoted searches get noisy fast. Check that each advertiser is the brand itself: on October 13, 2026, a search for "magnesium gummies" returned mostly personal-name Pages running long advertorials, not supplement brands.

Check each known competitor's Facebook Page. The Page transparency section shows whether the Page is running ads, with a link straight to them in the Ad Library. A quick pass through your list sorts the advertisers from the brands that only post organically.

Search Google for your product terms and note who appears in the sponsored results. Those advertisers are worth looking up in the Ads Transparency Center, and many of them run Meta ads too.

Where to look

Where can you see competitor ads for free?

Each platform runs its own library, and each one shows a different slice. None of them shows spend or results for ordinary commercial ads outside Europe.

Meta, step by step

How do you use the Meta Ad Library to see a competitor's ads?

For most DTC brands, Meta is where the competitive ads are. The Meta Ad Library covers Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Threads, and it takes about two minutes per competitor.

    1. Open the Ad Library

Go to facebook.com/ads/library. You don't need an ad account. Set the country to where the competitor sells, or All, and the category to All ads.

    2. Pick the Page, not the keyword

Type the brand name and choose its Page from the dropdown. A plain keyword search returns every advertiser that uses the word, which is useful for discovery but not for one brand.

    3. Filter

Keep active ads, then narrow by platform (Facebook or Instagram), media type (video or image) and date if the brand runs hundreds of ads.

    4. Open the ad details

Each ad shows the date it started running and the platforms it appears on. Ads that share the same creative are grouped, with a count of how many ads use it.

    5. Save the link

Bookmark the results URL. The library doesn't keep a list of brands or alert you to new ads, so you come back and search again.

A real search

What does this look like for a real category?

On October 13, 2026 we searched "linen sheets" in quotes in Meta's Ad Library, set to the US and active ads. It returned about 290 ads. The Citizenry came up most in the first 30 results, six times, ahead of Quince and Beau Renard at three each.

We then opened The Citizenry's Page with all countries selected. The library showed about 130 active ads. The oldest still running started on May 18, 2026, 148 days earlier (example), and runs on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Threads. Fifteen ads share that start date, which usually means a batch launch or relaunch, so 148 days is the age of those ads, not necessarily of the idea. 43 of its creatives were grouped as used by two to four ads each, and one line, "our French linen sheets are in high demand for a reason", shows up on ads started in May and again in August (one of them). The whole check took about five minutes.

Reading the ads

How can you tell which competitor ads are working?

No library shows spend or results for ordinary ads outside Europe, so stack the public signals instead:

Run time. Today minus the start date. Advertisers rarely keep paying for a loser for months, so an ad live for 30, 60 or 90 days has outlasted the tests around it. Treat it as evidence, not proof: some brands leave small always-on ads running.

Duplication. When the same creative appears across many ads, the brand is putting more budget behind it, often in new ad sets or countries.

Iteration. New hooks, edits and formats of one concept usually mean the concept is working and the team is trying to stretch it.

European data. For ads that reached the EU or UK, Meta and TikTok show reach and audience breakdowns, the closest thing to performance data the libraries offer.

An ad that scores on two or three of these is worth decoding: what the hook says, which angle it takes, and who it's talking to. Our ad angles guide covers how to name the angle behind a winning ad.

Meta, what's public

What does the Meta Ad Library show, and what doesn't it?

Every ad spy and tracking tool that covers Meta, ours included, starts from this same public data. What a tool adds is what it does on top: history, alerts, grouping and analysis. Nothing it adds changes what Meta publishes.

Retention, EU/UK reach data and the political-ad exception are from Meta's Ad Library help and API page, checked October 13, 2026. Start dates, same-creative grouping and the lack of saved lists or alerts are how the library worked when we used it on October 13, 2026.

The gaps

What do the free ad libraries miss?

History, mostly. Outside Europe, Meta drops ordinary ads once they stop, so a snapshot of a competitor's current ads shows the survivors, not the tests they ran and killed last month. If you only check occasionally, you also miss when their winners first went live, which is the most useful timing data you can get.

Alerts. None of the libraries tells you when a competitor launches something new; you have to go back and look.

Organic. The libraries cover paid ads only. In many niches the formats that win as ads start as organic TikToks and Reels, before they show up in anyone's ad library. If you need history, alerts or tracking at scale, our comparison of ad spy and tracking tools covers which tool does what and what it costs.

Doing it in ViralMojo

Competitor research without the tabs

Everything on this page works by hand, a competitor at a time. ViralMojo does it as research: from your product URL, it reads competitors' live Meta ads with how long each has been running, finds the organic TikToks and Reels winning in your niche right now, and pulls what customers say on Reddit, X and YouTube.

Then it does the part the libraries can't: it decodes why each winner works (the hook, the structure, how the audience reacts) and turns the research into angles, briefs and hooks in your customers' own words.

FAQ

Common questions.

Search each platform's public ad library. Meta's Ad Library covers Facebook and Instagram, Google's Ads Transparency Center covers Search, YouTube and Display, and LinkedIn has its own Ad Library. TikTok's Ad Library only covers ads shown in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK. Search by the competitor's Page, company or website for their ads, or by category keywords to discover who else is advertising.

Not for ordinary commercial ads. None of the four libraries shows spend for them; Meta and Google publish spend only for political and social-issue ads. For ads shown in Europe, Meta, TikTok and Google add reach or recipient counts, the closest public proxy. Paid tools that show spend are estimating it.

Only some. Meta's Ad Library shows ordinary ads while they're running; once an ad stops it disappears, unless it reached the EU or UK, where Meta keeps it for a year. Political and social-issue ads are kept for seven years. To keep a competitor's history, you need to save ads as you find them or use a tool that tracks the brand over time.

Look for ads that have run the longest, creatives the brand has duplicated across many ads, and concepts it keeps iterating on. None of these proves an ad is profitable, but together they're the best public signal. For ads shown in Europe, reach data adds another check.

Usually one of four things. The ad has stopped: outside the EU and UK, Meta removes ordinary ads from the library as soon as they stop running. The country filter is wrong: the library only shows ads that ran in the country you selected, so set it to where the competitor sells, or to All. The status filter is set to active only, and the ad you saw has since ended. Or you searched by keyword and the ad doesn't use that word; search by the brand's Page instead, which lists everything it's currently running.

No. The ad libraries are public, and searching them doesn't notify the advertiser. You also don't need an ad account to search Meta's Ad Library.

Find the ads that are working. Then work out why.

The free libraries show you the ads. They don't tell you why they work.
