Advantage+ creative, explained.
By Denzel Geng · Updated September 2026
Advantage+ creative is Meta's suite of AI enhancements that automatically modify your ad per person and placement — resizing and cropping it, rearranging or rewriting text, adding music, overlays, animation, or AI-generated backgrounds. Most are on by default; each has to be turned off individually.
The stakes changed with the algorithm: under Advantage+ delivery, your creative does most of the audience targeting — so an enhancement that changes what your ad says is quietly changing who it reaches.
The one rule: keep what changes delivery, question what changes your message.
Meta renames individual toggles constantly, so memorize the groups, not the names. Every enhancement does one of two things — it either fits your ad to a placement, or it alters what the ad says and shows:
| Enhancement group | What it does | Changes | Call |
|---|---|---|---|
| Placement & format fitting (visual touch-ups, adapt to placement, flexible format, dynamic media) | Crops, resizes, and re-orders your assets so the ad fits feed, Stories, and Reels. | Delivery | Keep on — this is the genuinely useful half of the suite. |
| Light visual tweaks (brightness & contrast) | Subtle image adjustments within your original frame. | Delivery | Keep on — low risk, occasionally helps. |
| Generative image edits (expand image, generate background, image/3D animation) | AI redraws parts of your visual — extends edges, invents backgrounds, animates stills. | Message | Off until tested — you won't reliably preview every variant that runs. |
| Text changes (text improvements, overlays, enhance CTA, AI text generation) | Rearranges your copy across positions, or writes and overlays new phrasing. | Message | Off — your angle is the ad; don't let a model paraphrase it. |
| Music | Adds a background track to Stories and Reels versions of your ad. | Message | Off unless you've previewed the track on your creative. |
| Commerce add-ons (catalog items, price/shipping overlays, product tags, info labels) | Bolts live product data onto the creative. | Depends | Test on catalog ads; off elsewhere. |
| Trust & navigation (relevant comments, site links) | Surfaces a comment or extra links you didn't pick under the ad. | Depends | Test — surfaced comments can be ones you'd never choose. |
The reasoning behind the rule: delivery-side enhancements make the same message fit more places. Message-side enhancements create versions of your ad you never approved — and because Meta optimizes per impression, the version that spends most of your budget can be one you've never seen.
How to actually turn them off.
There is no single "turn off Advantage+ creative" switch — each enhancement is its own toggle, and the section they live in is collapsed by default:
Open the enhancement list at the ad level
In Ads Manager, while building or editing the ad, scroll to the Advantage+ creative section and expand it — it collapses by default, which is why enhancements ship enabled unnoticed.
Toggle each enhancement individually
Switch off every message-side enhancement you haven't tested. There is no master off switch — skipping one leaves it live.
Set account-level defaults if your account has them
Some accounts can set defaults under Business settings → Advertising settings. Set them there too — but treat the ad level as the source of truth.
Re-check after duplicating or editing
Practitioners keep finding enhancements running that were "switched off" — disabled at one level, re-enabled at another, or restored on a duplicated ad. Make the expand-and-verify pass part of your launch checklist.
If you automate via the Marketing API: since v22.0 (January 2025) the single enable_standard_enhancements flag is gone — each enhancement is its own parameter, which at least makes the off state explicit.
Creative, audience, shopping — three different Advantage+ switches.
"Advantage+" is Meta's brand for a family of separate automations, and they're toggled in different places. Advantage+ creative (this page) modifies your ad's content. Advantage+ audience hands targeting to the algorithm, using your inputs as suggestions rather than limits — for most accounts it now outperforms tight interest stacks, so it's usually worth keeping on. Advantage+ shopping campaigns (now folded into Meta's streamlined campaign setup) automate the campaign structure itself. Turning one off does nothing to the others — audit each on its own.
The practical pairing for most performance accounts in 2026: broad delivery (Advantage+ audience on), controlled message (message-side creative enhancements off, tested ones on) — let the algorithm pick who sees the ad, and keep authorship of what they see.
Enhancements off. Now make the creative do its job.
Turning off message-side enhancements protects your test discipline too: if Meta is rewriting overlays and swapping text per impression, your A/B test has uncontrolled variables in every cell. Lock the enhancements, then run the loop that actually finds winners — one variable per variation, angles sourced from what's already working in your niche.
Advantage+ creative questions.
Advantage+ creative is Meta's suite of AI enhancements that automatically modify your ad per person and placement — resizing it, rearranging or rewriting text, adding music, overlays, animation, or AI-generated backgrounds. Most enhancements are enabled by default on new ads, and each must be turned off individually.
The placement-fitting half genuinely helps: letting Meta crop and adapt your ad to feed, Stories, and Reels widens delivery without touching the message. The message-side half — text changes, music, generative visuals — is where accounts report off-brand variants and untested copy spending budget. Keep the delivery-side enhancements, and turn off message-side ones until you've tested them on your own account.
At the ad level: open the ad in Ads Manager, expand the Advantage+ creative section (it's collapsed by default), and toggle each enhancement off individually — there is no master switch. If your account has defaults under Business settings → Advertising settings, set them there too, and re-verify at the ad level after edits or duplication, which can quietly re-enable enhancements.
Yes — edit the ad, expand the Advantage+ creative section, switch off the enhancements, and publish. Note that publishing an edit can reset learning on that ad, so batch enhancement changes with other edits rather than making them one at a time.
Usually yes — it's a separate switch from Advantage+ creative. Advantage+ audience controls who sees the ad, and for most accounts broad algorithmic targeting now beats tight interest stacks. The combination most 2026 performance accounts run: Advantage+ audience on, message-side creative enhancements off — the algorithm picks the audience, you keep authorship of the message.
"Standard enhancements" was Meta's old umbrella bundle for the default-on set (brightness, text combinations, overlays and more). It's being unbundled — Marketing API v22.0 (January 2025) removed the single enable_standard_enhancements flag in favor of per-enhancement parameters, and Ads Manager now exposes individual toggles. If you see the umbrella toggle, expand it: judge each enhancement inside on the delivery-vs-message rule.
Almost always an Advantage+ creative enhancement: the section ships enabled and collapsed, so overlays, rearranged text, or a generated background can run without you ever seeing that variant. Expand the section on the affected ad, screenshot what's on, and turn off the message-side enhancements.
The algorithm targets with your creative. Give it a message worth targeting with.
