How long should a winning ad run before I remake it?

By Denzel Geng · Updated October 30, 2026

Run a winning ad until its own numbers fade, not to a calendar date: remake it when frequency rises, CTR falls 20% or more below its first week and CPM climbs, all together for one to two weeks. For scale, the median static among brands' top Meta ads had been live 49 days, and 29% had passed 90 days. Have the remake in testing before the original fades, so you swap in a tested ad instead of starting from zero.

How long ads actually run on Meta

What the public data shows about run length, from the pool behind our static ad study (each of 200 DTC brands' top five ads by impressions, mid-August 2026) and Motion's 2026 benchmark.

The pool counts ads still live on the snapshot day, so ads that stopped early aren't in it. Days live shows a brand keeps paying for an ad; the Ad Library doesn't show whether it's profitable.

The three signals that say it's time

Read them as a trend against the ad's own first full week. One signal alone is noise; all three moving together for 7 to 14 days is fatigue (our rule of thumb; Meta publishes no time window).

  1. 1

    Frequency is climbing

Meta gives no fixed number. As a rule of thumb, start watching above 3 to 4 over 7 days on cold prospecting; retargeting runs higher by design.

  2. 2

CTR is 20% or more below its first week

For 7 days or more, on the same placement and audience. On video, a sliding hook rate usually moves first: the audience recognises the opener.

  3. 3

CPM is up 20% or more week over week

At the same time as the first two. Cost per result follows.

What to change first when you remake it

Swap the cheapest part first: a new hook, then a new angle, then a new format, and stop at the first change that brings CTR and cost per result back. Meta's own guidance for creative fatigue is a new ad with an image or video "materially different from the original creative", so a recolour or a recut of the same video doesn't count. Ad fatigue has the thresholds in full.

The other route is to start the next ad from a different winner in your niche: find an ad a competitor has kept live for months and put your product into it, keeping its hook, pacing and structure. Either way, launch the remake in its own ad set while the original is still working, so the switch is to a tested ad.

A real example: a static that kept running for three years

Outdoor Voices

Static image · lifestyle photo, one line

“Fleece. By Outdoor Voices”

Running since Sep 28, 2023: 1,116 days as of Oct 18, 2026.

A photo of the product in use and a single short line. Only 9 of the 544 statics in the August pool had passed a year, so a run like this is rare, and it's the point: a winner gets remade when its numbers fade, not when it reaches an age. Until then, every new ad is a test against it.

When the signals say so, not on a fixed schedule: frequency rising, CTR falling and cost per result climbing for one to two weeks. Because about half of all creatives are turned off before day 28 in Motion's 2026 data, plan to have new ads in testing every week.

There's no fixed number, and Meta doesn't give one. As a rule of thumb, start watching above 3 to 4 over 7 days on cold prospecting, and judge fatigue by frequency, CTR and CPM moving together rather than frequency alone.

No, keep it running. Test the remake in its own ad set or campaign so it doesn't take budget from what's already selling, and move budget once the remake beats the original on cost per result.
